Inadequate vaccines and security issues fuel faster spread
Transmission of Ebola occurs mainly through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of infected individuals. The risk is heightened in homes, clinics, and burial sites that lack strict infection control measures. Over 60% of recent fatalities happened outside treatment facilities, complicating safe burial procedures and contact tracing. The World Health Organization, Congo’s health ministry, and Africa CDC have expanded laboratory capacity, established additional treatment centers, increased border screenings, and enhanced public messaging. Despite these efforts, the pace and geographic scope of new infections have outstripped the response.
Uganda officially concluded its linked Ebola outbreak on July 28 after 42 days without new local cases. Similarly, France reported no secondary transmission from its single treated case. Congo remains the primary focus of ongoing transmission, with a case fatality rate close to 45% in early August. The outbreak’s rapid progression is partly due to late detection and the absence of strain-specific vaccines and treatments. Factors such as missed contacts, ongoing conflict, staffing shortages, and population movements have contributed to the widening spread.
