MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will restrict the range of Gemini model options available to free personal accounts starting October 9, 2026. Users without an AI subscription will only be able to access Flash-Lite via Gemini Apps. Access to Flash or Pro will be discontinued for these accounts under the new policy. Google outlined these updates in revised support documentation for its consumer artificial intelligence service. The new rules specifically pertain to personal Google accounts, not those managed through workplaces or educational institutions.

Current Google AI Plus subscribers will retain access to Flash-Lite and Flash after the changes are implemented. Nonetheless, their subscription will no longer include Pro access. The company has not specified a universal transition date for all AI Plus users. Instead, affected customers will be notified via email regarding when their access permissions will change. Subscribers to AI Pro and AI Ultra will continue to enjoy access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
Flash-Lite is intended as a streamlined Gemini model optimized for quick responses and common daily tasks. The standard Flash model offers enhanced capabilities while maintaining rapid reply times across various request types. Pro is designed to handle more complex workloads such as advanced mathematics, coding, and detailed analysis. Google states that the model can process text, files, images, and videos while performing deeper reasoning. Responses generated by Pro may take longer than those from other Gemini models due to their complexity.
Wider model access remains for paid Gemini plans
Google is introducing adjustable effort settings categorized as low, medium, and high for models available under a user’s plan. Higher effort levels allocate more resources for detailed responses but also consume more of the account’s usage quota. Customers on AI Pro and AI Ultra will have access to Deep Think, a feature designed for intensive reasoning tasks. Google describes Deep Think as an option that utilizes maximum parallel reasoning when managing complex requests.
These new restrictions follow earlier modifications to how Gemini Apps calculate usage limits. On May 17, 2026, Google implemented compute-based limits, which refresh every five hours until weekly caps are met. The calculation takes into account factors such as prompt complexity, features used, and conversation length. Premium features and advanced models tend to deplete allowances faster than basic requests. Additionally, Google extended these earlier limits to users under 18 on July 24.
Usage limits vary across Google AI subscription tiers
Users without a Google AI subscription are subject to standard usage limits. AI Plus offers twice that allowance, while AI Pro provides four times the standard limit. AI Ultra can offer either five times or 20 times the AI Pro allowance, depending on the plan. Tools like Deep Research, media generation, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think can utilize larger portions of these limits. Consequently, paid plans include higher usage allowances along with expanded access to models.
These October adjustments apply specifically to Gemini Apps accessed via personal Google accounts and do not impact every Google AI service. Work and school accounts are governed by separate rules, and developer services follow their own policies. Users can manage, upgrade, modify, or cancel their Google AI subscriptions through Gemini Apps and Google One. From October 9 onward, free personal accounts will depend on Flash-Lite instead of Flash or Pro. Google also advises keeping the Gemini mobile app updated as the new access structure becomes active.
